Detail Description
Villa Maridadi is a spacious, five bedrooms, beachfront retreat, located in the Canggu area just thirty minutes drive from the busy shops and nightlife of Seminyak and about forty-five minutes' drive from Bali's International Airport. Most of the island's tourist attractions are within easy access and the villa is close to the Nirwana Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, and the famous Tanah Lot sea temple, one of the island's most dramatic and venerated temples.
The approach to the villa is along a quiet winding road through the traditional village of Mengening. The narrow streets of this pretty Balinese village are surrounded by rice fields and punctuated by holy Banyan trees. A small intersection is the venue of a fruit and vegetable market and colourful temple ceremonies are a common sight.
The entrance to Villa Maridadi is equally time-honoured; fringed parasols flank an antique doorway and moss encrusted statues of Balinese gamelan musicians line the driveway. Built within the rice fields and boasting forty metres of beach frontage, the property is also blessed with panoramic views of the sweeping coastline and the distant volcanoes. The rugged Cemagi Beach is renowned for its world-class surf breaks, and the legendary sunsets here are among the best in Bali. The villa also overlooks the Hindu temple of Pura Bata Ngandang, perched on a rocky outcrop and lashed by the waves of the Indian Ocean.
Maridadi is set on 4050 square metres of land, and rests within a private walled garden complete with a 20 x 5 metre lap pool. The fresh green coastal lawns are dotted with fragrant frangipani trees and young palms; lobster claw heliconias hug the walls and in one corner, overlooking the beach, a raised balé pavilion is a peaceful haven for chilling out with a book or a sunset cocktail. The smooth flat gardens are perfect for weddings or functions, and also provide a great play area for children. The swimming pool with sunloungers and a timber deck reaches a depth of 2.5 metres and has a toddler's pool at the shallow end.
The property is comprised of a number of separate thatched pavilions arranged symmetrically between the main two-storey building and the open living and dining pavilion. Constructed of local materials, the style is restful with a fresh cool décor; and the modern fittings and fixtures are harmonised with antique furniture from India and Indonesia. Twin lotus ponds, linked by a central pathway and wooden walkways, complete the symmetry.
Designed to maximise the ocean views, the magnificent 12 x 8 metre living and dining pavilion is cooled by natural sea breezes and large pendulous ceiling fans. Tall coconut wood pillars support the traditional 'alang alang' grass roof, and the pavilion is furnished with carved sideboards, a day bed, local artefacts and a beautiful three metre long antique dining table that seats twelve people. Ideal for entertaining and relaxing, this ample lounge has a quality music system with surround speakers in the ceiling. A covered walkway leads to the fully equipped service kitchen, which is located within a self-contained pavilion beside another lotus pond dominated by a white marble Buddha.
There are two further living rooms for the comfort of the guests. An air-conditioned indoor study, with a cozy cushioned window seat and large floor cushions, is located next door to the master bedroom and is provided with a cable TV and VCD/DVD player. A second casual living area is located upstairs in the main building. Sliding glass windows take full advantage of the awesome views, and this sizeable games room is furnished with colorful cushions, an antique Javanese daybed, a pool table, a multi-gym, and a large flat screen cable Television with VCD and Play Station system.
The five bedrooms are all air-conditioned with the additional benefit of overhead ceiling fans and built in wardrobes. Each bedroom is at ground floor level and enjoys ocean views and the luxury of an en-suite garden bathroom. The master bedroom features teak-wood floors and sliding glass doors, which open on to an outdoor verandah furnished with daybeds and rattan chairs. Guests will be lulled to sleep by the constant murmur of the waves in an antique four-poster bed complete with diaphanous drapes. Each romantic garden bathroom is walled for privacy and is characterized an open-air shower, whimsical stone carvings and an impressive array of tropical plants and shrubs.
The bathrooms adjoining the master bedroom and the two main guestrooms each have a large bathtub that is protected from the elements by a thatched roof. Following the symmetrical theme, the two guest pavilions are mirror images of each other, each one a self-contained pavilion with teak floors, sliding glass doors, a canopied bed, an open verandah, and a cream terrazzo bathroom suite within a pretty garden bathroom planted with peace lilies. The remaining two bedrooms, and their adjoining bathrooms, are located on the ground floor of the main building; each room is furnished with antique twin trundle beds, making them ideal for children.
Another large lawn to the north of the main building makes a great play area and is suitable for badminton or volley ball. A door in the wall leads to the villa's shared tennis court, and the staff quarters are situated near the main entrance. The beach is just a few meters away from the property, bordered by a track and a low cliff, and easily accessible. The currents are strong, however, and swimming is not recommended.
